My advice. Leave yourself room for two separate distros on your hard disk. That way you can find one you like ande continue to experiment with the other partition so you can try out others.

Just an old photo of a past project. This was my old Volvo 145 which I decided to convert into a El-Camino style pickup truck.

The project was much harder than I originally intended it to be. It involved cutting the roof off with a circular saw (blade turned backwards...and ummmm no carbide tips pleez they hurt). Removing the glass from the rear doors--filling in the gaps where the windows and such were.

When finished I had no real need for it and it was given to a friend with a farm where it is still in use (I think) today.

First impressions of Suse 10 alpha 1

Well I've been using 10 alpha for a day or so. It's strictly open source so I had to go find a few packages I use and install them.

Some things I found:

-Tellico doesnt work
-PDF files just disappear so I'm downloading acroread (slow off the ftp server)
-Sound isn't working yet but that may just be me no adjusting it right
-No updates of course

More to come as I continue to tweak and learn

Updating to Suse Linux 10.0 alpha1

Wow what fun.

If you read down you can see that i've had some problems updating my computer.

I Had made up the CDs (5 of them) a few weeks ago...but wasn't able to update-at the time it looked like I had screwed up the cd burning.

But it wasn't the cds. I had inadvertantly screwed up my reiserfs file system--I think when I was experimenting with kleensweep (really should follow the warnings it gives!!

Any way the install was painless--it does reboot after the first cd whick i thought was wierd but then it proceeded thru the other cds and is working nicely...more to come

I am not a treehugger, I don't wear birkenstocks and I really don't even like recycling. But I like this a nice product that makes your bike more useful...hell they use it to carry a beer keg in one photo. A nice extension and load deck for any bicycle.

Great idea especially if you are extra car-challenged and need to run to the parts store if your ride is broke

We have several ipods in the family...none of them mine. I also have a RCA Lyra mp3 player I use for exercise.

I primarily use mine strictly for running etc, but occasionally I use it to listen to podcasts when I at the kids lessons etc. And it was thru this use I figured out just how well Apple did it when they constructed the ipod interface.

The lyra has a clunky 4 button finger-joystick arrangement I hate. It is nearly inpossible to move easily between folders and you can forget easily picking up where you left off before.

The simple clickwheel on my wife's mini is phenomenal. Ease of navigation is another awesome feature...at least the lyra was cheap.

Apple introduced it's new Ipod video this week...as you all probably know...unless you were in a coma I guess.

Lots of comments out there Jake Jarvis is upset because he bought a nano earlier in the week and would have waited until the video was released to buy.

And there is lots of grumbling about downloading shows and the fact that you can't rip dvds into the ipod (somebody must be working on that hack already).

I think the video portion will end up being a minor side note. While its going to be a "nice to have" I don't see it as a reason to buy an ipod. I seriously doubt it will impact sales at all except for a small bump over the next month or so.

Think about it:

Ipods are bought by people on the go. You don't need video for podcasts...nor would I want it.

I think the fact that the base BIG ipod is now 30 gig will be a plus...video? yawn

Beta Testing Opensuse 10

Well havent posted in a few days. Work, home etc getting in the way but it is finally the weekend.

Anyway one project I "attempted" this week was to download and install Opensuse 10 beta.

I used Ktorrent and got it downloaded actually pretty quick. I burned the 5 install Cds and was feeling pretty good about it.

I use a 75 gig hard-drive for linux on my computer. I never wanted to mess with repartitioning the windoze drive. I made a nice 29 gig partition for 10beta and restarted the computer with the install disks in the cd drive.

I rebooted an Yast came up nicely...I picked the installation partition and Yast started moving along perfectly...then

The package installation settings showed an error...it couldn't find any packages on the cds.
I tried all the cds since Yast said they didn't have to be sequential...but no luck.

I stopped the installation and removed the CD...rebooted

And found I couldn't get Linux to boot at all ARRRRRGGGHHHHH

Luckily I used Yast's repair tool and all is well again.

The Opensuse 10 alpha just got relaeased so I am downloaded the torrent now...maybe things will go better

I had this old crappy AOL promo disk case in a box of stuff.

I also had a nice set of usb cable adapters that I was continuously trying to keep up with--they are so dsmall they are easily lost.

So in the best fast example of the MAKE mentality I brought the two together.

A little time and a little velcro and i have a usb adapter set that I not only won't lose...but will also be able to keep them in easy reach on any cd rack

As I have stated before I have used Linux in my home for about half a year now full-time. Experimental years before don't count.

As I went thru an online update with Yast last nite I was going thru my mind what I am getting at low-cost and what it would cost if I used windoze.

First thing to note, which is hard to quantify, is peace of mind. I see all the new virus' coming out...all the trojans etc that take down so many computers. And I thankfully sit back and don't worry about it. I don't get spyware...I don't get virus and my computer doesnt slow down after a few weeks of use.

I needed an MP3 player for running...god knows it makes it easier (I really hate running) Anyway. There are several ipods in my house...none of them mine...they belong to the wife and kids and I didn't want to use those because I only wanted enough music to last 3 miles or so and it had to be durable also I didn't want to be too hurt if it got beat up.

I bought a LYRA RD2212 complete with FM radio and it has a few cardio features like a pulse taker etc.

As you can tell if you read my blog I want everything to work within Linux. I plugged it into my usb port and it immediatly showed up as a usb thumbdrive. loaded up 256k worth of 80s tunes and it was ready to go.

Not bad for $70

Like I said in an earlier post I use Linux at home 95% of the time. But the things I use Windoze for really annoy me.

Syncing with my Palmone Tungsten C--gpilot, jpilot, kpilot none seem to be able to connect
Downloading off of my Nikon Coolpix2000 Digital camera just won't work yet
Scanning on my HP PSC 1310 all in one printer...does everything else wonderfully

Those are my new projects

These are also the things that can turn a person off of Linux. People have gotten used to things being built for windows and then it just works...or fails miserably and you get the blue screen of death.

I know that there are things I can do with congig files etc to make it work...and i will. and if anyone ever reads this blog they will get to read about it here

I spoke in an earlier post about how my camera lacks screws and appears to be snapped together. Here's a pic to illustrate. There are no screws on any side that can be seen without removing the sticker on the back.

After removing the sticker there were three very small screws that held the back to the front cover. The circuit card is then removable in one piece. Seems they have modified the design from the ones I've seen online and in MAKE magazine

I've done alot of reading about the Dakota Digital disposable digital cameras. I had read you could pick them up at Walgreens etc. Well here in Honolulu we don't have Walgreens. But we do have Long's drugs...seems there everywhere. So I went looking for the cameras.

Success! They have both versions of the still camera. I could not find the CVS camcorder and I got nothing but a lot of blank stares from the "sales" associates...but whatever I can only do so much at a time.

I went ahead and bought one of the "version 1" cameras--the ones without the LCD display.

I got it home after the obligatory run to PAC SUN and the food court. I was able to get home with my new hack-toy. First thing i noticed is that this camera does not have the screws I had seen in the various websites and the MAKE magazine article.

I've taken some pictures of the work so far and will be putting them up soon...

All right I'll admit it. I am not near the hacker/geek/tech genius I would like to be. But I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last nite...sorry It is late. I digress.

One thing that is great about the web is customization. The old school newspapers and News shows are going the way of the dinosaur because the user is stuck with the content presented. I don't know about you but that seems so 90s to me.

I am a news junkie. Always have been now I have found the perfect way to get the news I want.

If you havent tried it go to http://news.google.com its a really great news site. But the best part is: on the right side of the screen is a gray block that says"edit this customized page" click this and you can add sections or delete sections you don't want to read about.

See this guy?? He is soo busted thanks to a smart woman and the cameraphone she was carrying. Seems she noticed the perv staring at her on tyhe subway and snapped his pic. Getting Linux working in the home

I had been wanting to utilize Linux in my home for a very long time.

There was a time I would download the floppy images with a 486-33 using a 2600 baud modem. Attempting to burn the images using rawrite etc. I do not miss those days.

But for various reasons mainly my own lack of geekiness I didn't commit to full-time Linux on home PC.

Then in 2004 I started picking up Linuxformat magazine and reading it. It had a wealth of information written in a way that allowed a non-unix geek an oppurtunity to learn without being turned off by pages and pages of : GRUB LILO FSCK KDE GEVERYTHING etc.

The main problem for noobs is that it is nearly impossible to wade thru all the techspeak in most forums. The magazine helped and it came with DVD on every issue with a distro onboard.

Between reading the articles about the distro and having them in my hand I decided to give it a try.

I bought a second harddrive. I wanted my windozeXP and my Linux separate. Since my Win HDD was 70 gig I bought a second 70 gig HDD and slaved it in.

The first distro i tried was SUSE Linux 9.0 and I hated it. My optical mouse had to replugged in after booting. It couldn't read my HDA drive (windows) and it just felt buggy and unrefined

Several renditions of Fedora etc followed.

I finally went out and purchased SUSE 9.3 professional and I love it!
